Background

In November 2019, the San Diego Convention Center (SDCC) hosted it's 30th anniversary celebration. Hundreds of guests attended a kickoff luncheon, including former employees, non-profit leaders, and government officials.

The team wanted to make the SDCC’s history and employees a focal point of the celebration. After brainstorming with the Communications team, we decided to create exhibits that celebrate the Center’s history, long-time staff and what the building means to them. In collaboration with another designer, I concepted, copyedited, and designed three large-scale physical displays for the event: two informational exhibit walls and an interactive wall. I worked closely with an external fabrication team to complete the exhibit on a tight timeline with little budget.

Exhibit Wall Design

The double-sided exhibit walls included copy and photography about the SDCC’s history, employees, community involvement and sustainability. The goal of this exhibit was to tell the story of the SDCC and celebrate those who made it successful.

Interactive Exhibit Design

I concepted and designed the interactive exhibit experience to serve as a brand activation and establish an emotional connection with attendees. Featuring three different prompts, attendees were invited to share their Convention Center story and hang their story card on on the wall. The display collected many heartfelt messages and memories that were shared across the organization.

Impact

The Communications team received incredible feedback from the Board of Directors, employees, and city officials for the event and activation. Read more about the event on the Convention Center Blog.

After the luncheon, the walls were displayed in two high traffic areas at the San Diego International Airport, where most event attendees fly through on their way to the Convention Center.

Soon after the event, I was recognized as an International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) 30 Under 30 honoree for leadership and innovation in design.
